DARREN VANDERPOEL: BATTERY MANAGER/ARRANGER

Darren VanDerpoel resides in Chino Hills, CA and works throughout Southern California as a music educator. After graduating from Vista HS in 2005, he went on to perform with Esperanza Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, Black Knights Indoor Percussion, Riverside Community College Marching Band, and RCC Indoor.   

Darren earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing Management from Cal Poly Pomona in 2013.  He currently serves as the co-director and performing member of Sidle Entertainment, who provide performing ensembles for special events and sports teams, such as Los Angles Clippers and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Darren has been an active percussion instructor in Southern California since 2005, working with several high schools and independent groups.  In addition to Dark Sky, Darren currently works at Diamond Bar HS, El Dorado HS, and Ayala HS.  Darren proudly uses Remo Drumheads, Zildjian Cymbals and Innovative Percussion Sticks and Mallets.

2020 will be Darren’s 3rd season writing for the Dark Sky ensemble and 1st as Battery Caption Head.

Zakk Hollander

ZAKK HOLLANDER: BATTERY INSTRUCTOR

Zakk lives in Orange County, CA and has been teaching percussion since he graduated from Mission Viejo High School in 2012. His performance experience includes The Academy, Blue Knights, Blue Devils, Orange County Independent, Pulse Percussion, and RCC. As an instructor, Zakk has worked with Orange County Independent, the Mandarins and several local high schools in Southern California. He currently teaches at El Dorado High School, Rowland High School and Diamond Bar High School.

Zakk is returning for his 3rd Dark Sky season.

Andrew Manzanares

ANDREW MANZANARES - BATTERY INSTRUCTOR

Andrew Manzanares has participated in the Marching Arts since 2008. He competed in WGI and SCPA circuits in the Scholastic World division with Mission Viejo HS (2008-12) and began his DCI career with Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets (2011-12). In 2013, Andrew became a Blue Devil where he marched for four years (2013-16), earning two gold and two silver medals at World Championships.  Andrew earned considerable indoor experience with RCC Indoor Percussion (2013-17), serving as Battery Section Leader in his age-out season.  Andrew has also taught at BDB and SCVC.

2020 is Andrew's third season instructing at Dark Sky.

Alan Aungst

ALAN AUNGST - BATTERY INSTRUCTOR

Alan Aungst began percussion with the Dartmouth High School Marching Band and Indoor drumline in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. His drum corps career began with the Spartans in 2012 and then Carolina Crown from 2013-2014. Alan then moved to Riverside, California to attend Riverside City College and perform with RCC Indoor Percussion (2015-2018). While in Riverside, he also began performing with the Blue Devils snare line marching from 2015-2017.

He has worked professionally with many high schools in Southern California from Orange County to Temecula County. Alan has also been working with The Cadets (2018 & 2019). Alan currently attends Cal State Long Beach where he is studying Music education.

This is Alan’s first year with Dark Sky Percussion.

Blake Dimas

BLAKE DIMAS: BASS DRUM INSTRUCTOR

Blake began marching in 2014 with Dark Sky and continued with the group through the 2017 season. His first season of Drum Corps was with Gold in 2014. He then marched Academy in 2015 and Blue Devils in 2016.

Blake has been teaching high school drum lines since graduating high school in 2014. Currently he is the Percussion Co-Caption at Torrance High School as well as the Bass Tech at Redondo Union High School and Diamond Bar High School.

In the spring of 2019 Blake graduated from California State University Long Beach with a B.A. in Political Science with Department Honors and a Minor in Philosophy.

This will be Blake’s first season of instruction with Dark Sky.

Gregory Vasquez

GREGORY VASQUEZ: BASS DRUM INSTRUCTOR

Greg's marching experience consists of Pacific Crest 2012-2013, OCI 2013, Blue Devils 2014-2016, and RCC 2015-2017. He has instructed at many Southern California high school programs and at POW Percussion. Greg is the current bass tech at Fountain Valley High School.


Greg is finishing his last year at Cal State University Fullerton to obtain a B.S. in Computer Science. He is humbled and extremely excited to be part of the 2020 DSP Staff.

Arcadio Naranjo Jr

ARCADIO NARANJO JR: VISUAL INSTRUCTOR

Arcadio Naranjo attended Vista Murrieta High School (2008-12) and had the honor of performing at Lucas Oil Stadium in the BOA Grand Nationals. After high school Arcadio attended Riverside City College studying Business and Music (2012-15) where he was also a member of the RCC Marching Band (2012-14).  From 2015-2016 Arcadio was a member of The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps where he developed his passion to become an educator. After aging out he continued as a Visual instructor at Murrieta Valley High School (‘16-present); Temecula Valley High School (‘16-present); Visual Caption Head of Rubidoux High School (‘17-present); and Brass and Visual Instructor at Etiwanda High School (‘17-present). This summer, Arcadio was a visual tech for The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps.

Arcadio has had a variety of performance opportunities beyond the marching arts, playing on the hit TV show Glee, on a Weird Al Yankovic music video (“Sports song”) and at Disney Concert Hall for the premier of an original piece entitled “What Does the Future Hold” by Jinjun Lee.

This is Arcadio's 2nd season on the Dark Sky staff.

Ted Chang

TED CHANG: VISUAL DESIGNER

Born and raised in the 626 of Southern California, Ted Chang first discovered the world of music and motion when he joined his middle school marching band. Since then, Ted has been a part of the Pageantry Arts as both a performer, and now a teacher/designer. He is currently the Visual Caption Head for Arcadia High School, and Cerritos High School. Other than teaching, Ted is also an active drill writer, and visual choreographer. Ted has also designed and taught for many indoor percussion ensembles including Arcadia World, Diamond Bar World, and RCC. Ted marched in Pacific Crest from 2010-2011, before joining and aging out with the Blue Devils 2012-2015. He was also a member of the RCC Percussion Ensemble in 2016. Besides the pageantry arts, Ted enjoys street wear fashion, and the urban dance scene!
