Tia Barrera



Tia Barrera is a percussion educator based out of Chino Hills, CA. Her percussion training began at Nogales High School and continued on through Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps, Orange County Independent, Dark Sky Percussion and independent studies.

Tia currently teaches at Nogales High School, Patriot High School and San Marino High School and previously taught at Arcadia High School and Diamond Bar High School. Tia was a member of Dark Sky from 2015-2017 and then joined the staff for the 2018 and 2019 season. She is excited to be returning to lead the Front Ensemble for the 2020 season.

Jimmy Madonia



Jimmy Madonia is a classically trained musician, coming from the orchestral string world as both a cello and upright bass player. Playing music since fourth grade, he began his percussion journey during his junior year of high school and has continued for over 15 years. Jimmy recently moved to Southern California after teaching and writing for many programs in the area including Basha HS, Highland HS, and Casa Grande Union HS to name a few, as well as Paragon (PIO) and Mosaic Percussion (PIO). He was also on the WGAZ (Winter Guard Arizona) Board of Directors from 2010 to 2014 in the roles of Percussion Director/Liaison and Percussion Judges Coordinator. Jimmy was the Front Ensemble Coordinator at POW Percussion in 2016-2017, teaches and designs for a few local programs and continues to write, consult, and design for programs in Arizona. He is also an active clinician and judge.

This will be Jimmy’s 1st year teaching at Dark Sky.

Conrad Alumia



CONRAD ALUMIA grew up in Murrieta, CA and currently resides in Los Angeles. He has been an active performer in the marching arts, having toured the country with the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps (2017) and the Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps (2016). Additionally, he has competed in WGI as a member of RCC Indoor Percussion (2016-2018) and Dark Sky Percussion (2015).

As an educator, Conrad has taught the front ensembles at Murrieta Mesa HS, Torrance HS, and Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps. Currently, he is a front ensemble instructor for Dark Sky Percussion, Los Alamitos HS, San Marino HS, and the concert percussion ensemble at Notre Dame HS.

This will be Conrad’s 2nd season teaching at Dark Sky.

Grant Bubar



Grant Bubar is a freelance percussionist and educator based out of Tarzana, California and is thrilled to be joining the staff at DSP for the 2020 season. As an advocate for the education of percussion as a complete art form, Grant has enjoyed performing in, and teaching a wide range of ensembles of varying styles. Besides competing in WGI with Dark Sky Percussion (2017, 2019), Grant has performed with various other orchestras, wind ensembles, and chamber groups, including the West Coast Symphony and the TEMPO new music ensemble.

Grant also works as the percussion director for Canyon High School (Santa Clarita), where he instructs both marching and concert percussionists. Grant is currently completing his undergraduate degree in music education from Cal State Northridge and plans to pursue a Graduate degree in Percussion Performance after that.

Grant was a 2019 Dark Sky age-out and this is his 1st season instructing at Dark Sky.

JV Villarreal



JV Villarreal is currently attending California State University Fresno, majoring in Music Education. He is a member of the Fresno State Percussion Studio as well as the Fresno State Wind Orchestra.

JV has traveled around the United States on tour with Drum Corps (Winning high percussion with Blue Devils B in 2013 and aging out with Pacific Crest in 2016). He was also been a WGI World Class Finalist with Dark Sky Percussion in 2016.

He has been an educator in the Central Valley since 2013, teaching several ensembles and individuals at Clovis East High School, Reyburn Intermediate, Buchanan High School, Alta Sierra Intermediate, and Clovis West High School.

We are pleased to have JV returning to Dark Sky as a 2020 staff member.

Angel Abonza



Angel Abonza was born and raised in Pomona, California, and currently resides in nearby Ontario, California. He has been teaching for the past several years, and is currently a front ensemble instructor for Vessel Drum & Bugle Corp, Colony High School, Etiwanda High School, and Savannah High School.

Angel started as a percussionist in his sophomore year at Colony High School. After graduating in 2013, he continued to pursue his career in the marching arts performing with the Riverside City College Marching Tigers (2013 - 2015), Gold Drum and Bugle Corp (2014), the Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps (2015), and Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps (2016). Angel was also involved with the indoor percussion circuits, performing and aging-out with Dark Sky Percussion (2014 - 2018).

Dark Sky is happy to have Angel back on the Dark Sky team for the 2020 indoor season.

Justin Page



Justin has been a percussionist for nearly 10 years now. He started on mallets at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside.

Justin marched Watchmen Drum and Bugle Corps (2014), Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps (2015-2018), and Dark Sky Percussion (2016-2019).

He is currently a music major at RCC and is an instructor at Summit High School, Savanna High School, and Ayala High School.

Justin was a 4 year member of the Dark Sky front ensemble and a 2019 age-out. This will be his first season on staff.
